Do not bother to eat here. The DQ burger would be better. Steak was tasteless. veggie was frozen corn microwaved beyond taste and texture. Wine was red vinegar. We ate the salad and left. Felt sorry for the waitress...even she was embarrassed.

Umm.. it was akin to The Sizzler. If in the area I'd probably go back but I would specify that I don't want sauce on my steak. I'm not entirely sure what the sauce was but there was a lot of it and it wasn't something I enjoyed. The service was great, there must be a dish that's really good. I'm just not sure what it would be.

Had lunch here with my wife and two girls and it was awesome!! I had the golden nugget burger and even after I was so full I couldn't stop eating the food was that good. My wife had the salmon fettuccine and it was perfect and my two girls had the chicken strips with mashed potatoes which even tho they are both picky eaters the ate everything on their plates.

very disappointing. slow service, cold food, tasted microwaved and dried out. its very dark and dingy inside ... very outdated and depressing and smells musty.

Love this place! Each time we are in John Day we just have to stop in and eat here. Waitress Lisa dose an amazing job of covering the needs of any size table. Their tender prime rib and steaks are prepared the way we request (well done to medium-rare) the first time. Their desserts are fresh and delightful. They also serve a great breakfast and lunch menu.

The place looked great from the outside so we decided to have supper here. Big mistake. There were two waitresses and only a few tables when we arrived tired and hungry. We placed our order and twenty minutes later got our soup and salad. I was facing the clock so I had no problem with knowing how long things took and didn't even have to estimate. The soup was mediocre at best and I only ate half of it. Sixty three minutes after ordering, our entrees came. I had the pork loin with garlic mashed potatoes and my companion had the flat iron steak with garlic mashed potatoes.. For both of us, the potatoes were salty, dry, and lukewarm. For me, the pork had been cooked about an hour too long. I couldn't cut it because it just shredded the way overdone pork will do. I believe that the way the description read on the menu that it was cooked in a sauce. No, the sauce was put on as an after thought. A long with being overcooked, it was extremely dry. The two of us had to ask for gravy for the mashed potatoes. My companion order his steak rare and at best it was a medium rare. I must say though that the sauce for the steak was good.. The waitress came by and said, "You didn't like the pork did you?" When I said no, she told me that when she saw it she didn't think I would like it. If you knew that, why did you serve it any way? Of course I didn't eat it and she took the plate away. Now the meal came with soup, mashed potatoes, and the meat. When she brought the bill she had crossed off the price of my dinner, but there were two other charges on there. When asked what they were for, she said the soup and the potatoes. What???? Any way, the cook was given the blame for everything and apparently the waitress does not like the cook. Kept saying she should be fired, shouldn't be working there, etc. Ok...yes, I would hold the cook responsible for the amount of time to get the entry, for serving lukewarm and salty potatoes, possibly overcooking the pork, and definitely overcooking the steak, but in every restaurant I've been in or worked in, the waitress is responsible for soups and salads. Which for us took twenty minutes. All in all, looks are deceiving. It looks nice outside, but as far as meals go, go somewhere else. I only wish we had gone to the restaurant that we had breakfast at the next day! The prices compared to portion size are definitely not in line. What a shame. I understand it used to be a good restaurant.

Love this place. Ate in the bar, cook came out to meet us to make sure our steaks were cooked to perfection. Linda the bartender made sure we found the right wine for our dinner. Great people, great food! Will stop here again!

I wouldn't eat here ever again even if it was the only place in town. McDonald's and Dairy Queen are much better.

Food was pretty good the portions were excellent for the price. SERVICE WAS GREAT. We sat in the bar and had great service and a pleasant experience with down to earth staff and patrons. Beer prices good, but selection could have been better. Close to where we stayed and within walking distance which made the beer even better. Hope to return soon.

We didn't eat here, but Hubby and I had lots of fun in the bar. The locals were all so nice and very chatty. We really felt like they welcomed us with open arms. The drinks were strong and they had a pretty good glass of red for me. They have pool tables and a TV for entertainment, but if those same locals are there, you won't need anything but good conversation.

id say 2.5stars to be exact. First the decor is miner camp which fits the town. The menu is a little awkward and the food was just ok. We ordered Mozzarella cheese sticks which were perfectly cooked and really good but NO dipping mariana!?! They only have ranch, that sucked! lol The bar seems to be the hotspot which looked like a great place to trow some back but had to keep driving. No many places in this town, better food choices would be a big hit here.

Stopped in john day for the night. Saw the menu in the office of the motel were staying in, sounded good and it was! Excellent service, i had the prime rib, small cut, cooked just as i asked, excellent. my dad had the federer burger and he said it was one of the best burgers hes had in years! Excellent food, excellent service what else is there!

The Grubsteak falls a little short. While the service was good, and the joint was clean my $30 meal wasn't what it should be. The T-bone I ordered was without flavor, and had a texture I have never experienced. It was also a chore to wrestle the flys while trying to eat my mediocre dinner. The place was referred to me by a local, so it must have some redeeming qualities. I wouldn't be opposed to giving it a second chance next time I'm in town
